A Battle on the Court

Fabulous Federer Captures U.S. Open Title

By Mahmoud Ben Halim

The 2008 US Open (August 31-September 13) was played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. The tournament was a fabulous event with many surprises.

The fabulous Swiss Roger Federer captured the 2008 US Open title with a dramatic victory over Brit Andy Murray which also put in place a record that might not be broken; he winning two grand slams in Wimbledon and the US Open five consecutive times.

On the ladies side, Serena Williams captured her third US Open title against Jakovic with a 6-4, 7-5 victory. Both the men’s and women’s US Open singles champions will earn $1.5 million with the ability to earn an additional $1 million in bonus prize money. The US Open was sponsored by Lexus.

Federer beat Andy Murray, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2. He stated after the match, “It’s all about wins, and that’s why this is huge,” “This is massive, really, and I’m very, very happy about this Grand Slam.” His victory this time had a great impact on him as an athlete because it is his fifth time in a row to win. I think the 2008 US Open was a great one because of the many surprises and unexpected losses and wins from the many tennis players who participated.
